Julian delivers a talk about the basics of Startup Weekend

We held our reunion and match event at San Diego’s 3RD SPACE, a club for creatives, on March 14th, reuniting SWSD alumni and introducing newcomers to the organization. The event packed 3RD SPACE and drew plenty of new startup community members, many of whom also came with interest in organizing the next Startup Weekend San Diego, tentatively slated for June 2012.

Turnout for the event was excellent!

Startup founders filled the Match Board with nearly two dozen requests for roles in their businesses, ranging from marketing positions to developers and co-founders.

We want to thank everyone for attending and we hope the information session was useful for everybody involved! If you missed out on the reunion, we snapped photos of the listings created on the Match Board and have posted them below for those interested in getting involved with a local startup.

Also, a big thanks to those who have signed up to help with the next Startup Weekend San Diego. We will soon announce the date for the next event plus give more details about the new parts of our organization that we hope will give plenty of extra support to the startup community!

Startup Match = Ideas + People
Are you interested in finding a startup to join or are you looking for talented folks to join you?   An essential part of Startup Weekend Events is The Match where attendees decide which team to join or try to recruit people to their team. Participants in this evening will have the opportunity match their skills and/or needs with others looking to be part of a great entrepreneurial experience.

Startup Weekend San Diego 3 saw over 100 participants come together, to form teams and launch seventeen new startups.  This group of strangers with diverse skill-sets met on Friday night, and over the course of 54 hours formed teams, decided on a shared vision and worked toward creating a viable startup in time for a pitch to judges. By Sunday night, the excitement in the presentations was easy to see.

Before you attend the weekend, we thought you might want a few pointers on how to get there, what to bring, things to expect, etc.:

Self-Parking Instructions:

If you are driving yourself to San Diego Startup Weekend, there is free street parking on Friday evening after 6PM and all day Sunday. On Saturday, however, you’ll have to find a parking lot. Luckily there are plenty of parking lots around Co-Merge Workplace and we’ve compiled a list of the two closest parking lots for your convenience. After forming your team Friday evening, we highly encourage car pooling if possible!

1. Ace Parking – Corner of 3rd and Ash St.

2. Ace Parking – Corner of 4th and Ash St.

Public Transportation

Unless you are parking near the venue, both the bus and the trolley can get you at or near Co-Merge with little hassle. The blue line and the orange line trolley lines both drop off two blocks away from Co-Merge on C Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave at Civic Center Station. The #3 bus drops off at 4th and Ash, just up the block. For other lines that may go near Co-Merge, please see the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System website.

What to Bring

• Laptops, tablets, phones – or any other mobile computing devices
• Chargers (for your electronics – not of the football variety!)
• Extension cords and power strips (however there will be many outlets available!)
• Notepads and pens or pencils (yes, even in the digital age this may help!)
• Your best ideas!

What you don’t need to bring: snacks (we’ll have you covered!), beverages (yes, we’ll have that covered, too).

If you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions (whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten free or otherwise), please let us know and we will do the best we can to accommodate you.

What to Expect

The following post was written by Adam Kaye, an entrepreneur and organizer of Startup Weekend Tallahassee. This comes from the official Silicon Tally blog, a local tech incubator founded by Adam.

Many of the participants are emailing us and asking us, “What should we do to get ready for Startup Weekend?”

Well, if you don’t plan on pitching an idea, then you should just relax and spend “quality time” with your friends or family during the evenings this week, because they will not get much attention from you this coming weekend at Startup Weekend Tallahassee.  At most, I would reccommend reading a few articles on TechCrunch or watching a few episodes of TechStars Reality Show Series on Bloomberg TV here online.

However, if you are do plan on pitching your own idea to work on then I recommend doing these two things:

1) GET CUSTOMER VALIDATION AHEAD OF TIME!!!

It’s not cheating to work on your startup before the weekend, but know you aren’t going to win if you are pitching an existing business or launched company.  What you COULD & SHOULD be doing now is getting customer validation on your idea or concept.  Get out there and ask people what they think of it, if it solves a problem that they experience, would they use your product/service, and what would they pay for it.  Perhaps even get these recorded on video.  Perhaps send out a survey from SurveyMonkey or Wufoo.  If you can prove that “demand,” then it won’t only impress the judges but it could also help your case when pitching other participants to work on your idea that weekend.

2) WORK ON YOUR PITCH! YOU ONLY HAVE 60 SECONDS!!!

So, many of you are concerned about only having 60 seconds to convince a group of people to like your idea so much that they spend their next 3 days working on it exclusively instead of watching college football or spending time with the family!  Below is a slide from the Powerpoint presentation which the event’s facilitator will show you on how to do it.  Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse… Please do not be one of those people who spends the first 45 seconds talking about their background to then get cutoff from the mic 15 seconds later when they haven’t even stated what their idea/product actually is…

ALSO, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT PEOPLE STEALING YOUR IDEA… some people are scared to share their idea because they believe it is valuable.  The truth is that ideas are worthless and execute is everything.  This is your opportunity to EXECUTE on your idea in one weekend and get it to a “pitchable” state.  Don’t worry about people taking your idea, instead focus on executing on it faster than anyone else can.  Your competition is not going to be in that event venue, they are in Silicon Valley, New York, Beijing, Eastern Europe, or some other place full of “hungry” entrepreneurs and developers.

Startup Weekend San Diego, October 14-16, 2011

We’re giving away a ticket to Startup Weekend San Diego 3!
